im not entirely sure how it works, i think having a locked door in proximity actually reset the decay timer of exterior stone wall. i dont know if they are attached or not to the actual base, i just know that 48h after i placed my exterior stone walls, they were still at 100%hp because we played a lot during the weekend and opened doors every 6 hours.
