With more throttle it should stay in first longer and at WOT shift later and hard enough to chirp the tires.

Here is where you will have to drill a hole as the newer Holley carbs have the upper hole and your's doesn't.With the pan off look at the Throttle Valve plunger. It should be buried in the throttle valve sleeve and the lever should be right against the sleeve. Lock down the Allen set screw on the cable.
