The KU Natural History Museum, part of the Biodiversity Institute, is home to four floors of public exhibits including the historic Panorama, live snakes and insects, a unique living Paleo Garden, vertebrate and invertebrate fossils, the flora and fauna of the Great Plains and more.At the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, there is a lot to see and do. Though people have been visiting the Museum for years, it doesn’t hurt to cover the basics.The Sternberg Museum of Natural History houses over three million paleontology, zoology, and geology specimens that document life and environments in the Great Plains region of North America. Consequently, the collections are vital to understanding, measuring, and monitoring the biodiversity of past and present ecosystems of the region.

Currently, the collection contains approximately 160,000 specimens and nearly 600 types. A series of type catalogs were published from 1982-1986 (University of Kansas Museum of Natural History Miscellaneous Publications No. 73, 77, 78, and 79). Specimen data can be searched through iDigBio, GBIF, or our Specify database. The division’s ...
