Bad food, getting too wet and cold, exposure to large amounts of corpses for long periods of time are all things that can make you sick. If you get wounded by a zombie you can get sick, and in that case you're probably dead. Corpses rot away in 2 weeks with default settings, from what I can tell. Maybe less time.
